Accessible and Equitable Standard for AI
On December 3rd, 2025 – the International Day of Persons with Disabilities – Accessibility Standards Canada unveiled the Accessible and Equitable Artificial Intelligence Systems standard (CAN-ASC-6.2).
It aims to ensure that AI developed and deployed in Canada is accessible through:
- designing AI systems in consideration of their accessibility to people with disabilities
- facilitating fairness and avoiding exclusion
- setting processes to ensure the centrality of accessibility and equity across the AI lifecycle
- educating people on developing equitable and inclusive AI
It's a sweeping, multifaceted effort evolving through years of hard work by a diverse technical committee chaired by Dr. Jutta Treviranus, director of the OCADU's Inclusive Design Research Centre. For more info, peruse the OCADU news release (December 5, 2025).
